Remember – you are never alone – at any time there are people across the world joining
their prayers with the saints and all the hosts of Heaven.
You may like to spend some time thinking about where and how you will pray. We suggest
finding somewhere where you are unlikely to be interrupted. Switch your mobile phone off,
or leave it in another room.

Some people find it helps to have something to focus on. Perhaps you could light a candle,
set up a cross, or a picture of Jesus or something that helps you to think about God.
Each day has a similar pattern (with bible readings, reflections and hymns) and we have
suggested things and people that you may want to pray for and space for your own prayers.
Finally, if you run out of words know that God is with you, and that the Holy Spirit
‘intercedes with sighs too deep for words.’ (Romans 8:26)

Sunday 22nd March – Mothering Sunday

Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your disciples,
‘I am with you always’.
Be with me this day, as I offer myself to you.
Hear my prayers for others and for myself,
and keep me in your care.

Opening prayer

God of love,
passionate and strong,
tender and careful:
watch over us and hold us
all the days of our life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Bible readings and reflection

Colossians 3:12-17 John 19:25b-27

On this Mothering Sunday we remember our mothers, living and passed, and
those important, inspirational women in our lives.
We remember too that Jesus longs to gather his “children together as a hen
gathers her brood under her wings.” (Matthew 23:37) We usually think of God
as Father, but God also loves us with the tenderness of a mother’s love.

Do you ever think of God as both Father and Mother, tenderly caring for her
children?
How do you experience God as both Father and Mother?
Who do you want to thank God for sending into your life this Mothering
Sunday?

Song – Bind us together, Lord

Bind us together, Lord,
Bind us together
With cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together, Lord,
Bind us together,
Bind us together with love.

There is only one God,
There is only one King;
There is only one Body,
That is why we sing:

Bind us together, Lord…

Made for the glory of God,
Purchased by His precious Son;
Born with the right to be clean,
For Jesus the victory has won.

Bind us together, Lord…

You are the family of God,
You are the promise divine;
You are God’s chosen desire,
You are the glorious new wine.

Bind us together, Lord…

Prayers

We pray for:
• mothers and those who are like mothers to us. For parents, foster
carers, teachers and school staff, and all who care for children in any
way. We ask for your blessing on all who care for children and young
people everywhere.
• all infected with or affected by coronavirus, and all who suffer in body
mind or spirit. We ask for your mercy and healing presence to be known
by those who suffer.
• all who offer help and support, who care for others, for our NHS and
emergency services. We pray that you make us aware of the needs of
those around us and let your love show through our words and actions.
• the people and things that God has placed on our hearts…

Mothering Sunday Prayers

For the care of mothers; Thanks be to God.
For their patience when tested; Thanks be to God.
For their love when tired; Thanks be to God.
For their hope when despairing; Thanks be to God.
For their service without limit; Thanks be to God.
Thank you God for the love of our mothers:
thank you, God, for their care and concern;
thank you, God, for the joys they have shared with us;
thank you, God, for the pains they have borne for us;
thank you, God, for all that they give us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

Blessing

Deep peace of the running wave to you
Deep peace of the flowing air to you
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you
Deep peace of the shining stars to you
Deep peace of the gentle night to you
Moon and stars pour their healing light on you
Deep peace of Christ the light of the world to you
Deep peace of Christ to you
